An Art Deco inspired with suites and chambers and secret passageways. Upstairs there is a boutique black glass cocktail lounge called Glass, which exudes timeless elegance and glamour. Downstairs there is Paper's restaurant The Garden which specialises in Pacific Fusion cuisine and fine French wines. The Press Room is the VIP lounge, which displays some of the 20th century's most dramatic newspaper and magazine headlines.
Set in the bowels of Café Royal, Paper, along with its sister venue Glass, has just had £750,000 spent on it in an attempt to turn it into London’s most exclusive celebrity hangout.
The Venue
Paper houses three VIP rooms - a Bed Room, a Press Room papered with front pages and magazine covers and a UP (or untouchable person) room, which comes with a safe accessed by a jewelled key and is reached by a snapper-proof tunnel. The club is aimed at both the rich and famous and (more importantly) those who want to associate with them – surely any high-end club’s real bread-and-butter?
The Atmosphere
Paper makes no bones about the clientele it is hoping to attract. Even the bar staff look like celebrities-in-waiting, not to mention the 1940s-style hostesses, all airline glamour and touch-me-not attitude.
As you’d expect, there’s a lot more sitting, chatting, posing and air-kissing going on than dancing; in fact, in some ways Paper is much more a bar than a club.
The Decor
The decor may be restrained – parchment, black glass and leather – but the crowd are brash and loud, the girls glammed up to the nines, the boys flashing their cash around.
The Last Word
Beneath the glossy refit and attention-grabbing extras, Paper isn’t quite as cool as it thinks it is. While it will doubtless attract high flying city wide-boys with money to burn, ex-Big Brother contestants, glamour models and maybe the odd minor royal, A-listers with serious street cred will probably head elsewhere.
As one of a very particular type the club is undeniably impressive, but it's worth remembering that Paper’s glamour is only skin deep.
