Fusion and Foundry is a 1300 capacity club space within Sheffield University Students’ Union that holds several high-profile events, including the most famous one, Tuesday Club, an event that allows them to boast previous guests like Andy C, Flying Lotus and Skream.
The Venue
Fusion and Foundry is a little out of town, you will find it a few minutes walk from the end of West Street. It has two rooms each with their own bar. Officially the space is equipped for around 700 and 600 people per room, but this fluctuates considerably when the big acts are on in the main room.
There’s not much in the way of decoration, it’s pretty dark but there are huge screens set towards the front of the room with brilliant video and light displays.
The People
Since Fusion and Foundry is in the Sheffield Union, they sometimes insist that you either have an NUS student card or are accompanied by someone who has one. This is not enforced for the external promotions, such as Tuesday Club, Fuzz and gay night Climax. The security is very tight whatever night you attend, and there are bouncers dotted about each room and at the entrance. Apart from that, all the staff are friendly but the bars are extremely busy so don’t expect a lengthy chit-chat.
The Music
Tuesday Club, in particular, has become a legendary night by packing it out on a school night for several years. Names such as Toddla T, Plastician and DJ Marky are just some of the big DJs to play at the club. Other in-house promotions cater more for the typical student market and play pop, indie and anthems, whilst Fuzz skips to a beat of electro, punk and live bands.
The Drink
One of the best things about partying at a student union are the prices at the bar. Pints of Carlsberg and Grolsch start at about £1.75. Drinks promos depend on the night but may include bottles of Coors and Sol for £1.85. Branded spirits like Smirnoff, Bacardi, Jim Beam and mixers can be as little as £1.60 for a single or £2.95 for a double.
The Last Word
Fusion and Foundry has a well deserved reputation of presenting a top variety of guests. It keeps its prices low, and whilst it is devoted to the students who run and support it, non-students can enjoy the very fine entertainment it delivers, too.
