Rektchord Interview for Clubnet UK

Rekchordz originated in Cornwall, which is actually where we first met, through an old house mate. What you might not know is Jamie (Rekchordz) is also really into Magic, especially card tricks. Jamie is in to Psychology and Hypnotherapy as am I, and there have been several early morning conversations related to these subjects after nights partying all over Cornwall. Beach parties, nights out clubbing and Cornish house parties which do tend to be messier than most I have been to. DJing hardcore originally and progressing through many genres, Jay has become one of the world’s finest Tech Funk DJs. Playing all over the world, now living in Bristol where the dance music scene is thriving. He has recently played in America in San Fransisco and is hoping to return soon. This DJ is definatley one to watch with other amazing DJ’s like Elite force remixing his tunes. Rektchords has also been nominated for awards at Breakspoll, the International Breakbeat awards.

  • I would like to start by thanking you for doing this interview with clubnetuk. I have been a friend of yours for a few years now and actually a real fan of your music, especially with your recent stuff, how long have you been Djing Tech funk?

I'd say I've been involved within the Tech-Funk movement for around 4 years, Although I was Into a similar concept at the very start of my production.

  • How long have you been DJing  and producing?

I started DJing at around 14 and production 17. I'm now 26.

  • So where in the country are you currently based?

I'm currently residing in Bristol, Love it!

  • I know you used to DJ Breaks, even being nominated at the International Breakbeat awards, what kind of music were you first mixing?

Well you should never be ashamed of your roots so here goes... I started off with happy hardcore & some not so hideous jungle.

  • Do you remember what your first Vinyl was?

"Super sharp shooter!"

  • What was the first ever Single and album that you bought?

I'd like this to be something cool, however I think that would be 'Bryan Adams- Everything I do', when I was 6. Not sure about Album, most likely something equally as cheesy.

  • Who would you say were your biggest influences musically when you were growing up anyone surprising?

I've always been hugely influenced by classical music: Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Pachelbel, Barber and also the more contemporary composers such as Hans Zimmer, John Murphy, Sigur Ros. I've always been fascinated how a sound can be so beautiful and powerful it completely alters the way I perceive my own life and emotions. On the other side of the spectrum, growing up skating and surfing I was had a passion for Skate punk: Millencolin, rancid, nofx.

  • Do you remember your first Dance music event and what was it?

The first time I played out in a club at 16 years old.. not really sure how the bouncers let me in?!

  • Where do you see the Tech funk scene going within the next couple of years?

Due to the very nature of tech-funk I can see it appealing to a lot of contemporary Djs. It's becoming much more acceptable to play a range of genres and crowds seem to take on board the 'good music is good music' attitude. Tech-funk allows the space to be creative with the majority of genres within dance music and not hold artists back with guide lines.

  • Who would you say is the DJ or producer you most admire at the moment within the dance music scene?

The pure professionalism and creativity that Shack 'Elite Force, Zodiac Cartel' puts out there has been inspiring for years. A perfect example of how putting the effort in gets great rewards.

  • I live in London now and the music scene is very different here from Cornwall where we both originate where would you say is your favorite place to play out at curently?

Hard to answer in one. Within the UK I enjoy Birmingham. Abroad its got to be some of the spots in California.

  • Have you got any collaborations planned or coming up?

I recently did a track with the Tek Freaks whilst I was out touring the west coast of the States .I might do something with the Freerange guys if I find the time, though i do find it hard to work at the pace I'm happy with.

  • Is there one person within or out of the dance scene you would like to work with, using their vocals or maybe another producer?

Would love to work with Jamie T on something a little less 'Dancey'.

  • What would you say has been the highlight of your career up until this point, a piece of music your most proud of?

First getting signed to U&A recordings was a big step for me. Just getting to play all round the world blows my mind every time.

  • Is there any up and coming DJ’s or producers that you think we should look out for this year?

Loops of Fury are doing some pretty big things at the minute. I think the Freerange guys have the breaks thing locked down.

  • Can you tell the readers one thing that we would not already know about you?

Besides music I'm completely obsessed with Psychology and social dynamics. Pretty nerdy!

  • Thanks for doing this interview what is coming up for you in the next 12 months any trips over Seas coming up?

I will be out in Budapest in a couple of weeks and continuing to play round the UK.. Talks of a possible OZ tour and working out getting back to San Francisco. The rest is a bit hush hush at the minute.

  • And finally what have we got to look forward to production wise from you in the near future, is there something in the pipeline you are particularly excited about?

I have an arsenal of tunes ready for this summer! Looking at an E.P's on Will Baileys Simma imprint, Remix and original set for U&A after. Then remix's on Deathproof, Benefit and MUM. At the moment it stands at 6 originals and 4 remix's.
